Spaying and Neutering for Pets

Contact our team for additional information or to schedule your pet's appointment.

Cats and dogs can have anywhere from 1 to 12 puppies or kittens in each litter. Having one pet is already a huge responsibility which is why some pet parents choose to spay or neuter them. Spaying and neutering are surgeries performed on pets that remove their reproductive organs, stopping them from having offspring. We offer this service to our patients as we know the surgery can extend their life by providing other health benefits. Call us at 416-966-1830 to discuss the procedure for your pet.

What is the procedure like for my pet?

Before we perform either procedure, we run diagnostics to learn more about your pet's health. Pre-anesthetic blood tests aim to catch underlying illnesses that could cause complications. Once your pet is cleared for surgery, our team will schedule the procedure. During both surgeries, we use general anesthesia, so your pet doesn't feel any pain. The veterinarian will make an incision on the abdomen during spay surgery and remove the ovaries and uterus from the female pet. For male pets having neuter surgery, a small cut is made near the scrotum, and the testicles are removed.

Why should I consider spaying or neutering my pet?

Pets who haven't been spayed or neutered are at risk of developing ovarian, testicular, and prostate cancer when they are older. Spay and neuter surgery can also prevent your pet from developing bacterial infections or urinary tract diseases. Finally, this procedure will curb your pet's naughty behaviours. Your pet will be less likely to spray furniture, hump objects or people, or become aggressive.

When should my pet be spayed or neutered?

We usually recommend this procedure when pets are around 6 months old. Your loyal companion becomes sexually mature and will begin to show undesirable behaviours around this age. Your pet can still have the surgery if they are beyond this age and are healthy.
