IS YOUR PET’S MICROCHIP INFORMATION UP TO DATE?

Microchips are an important part of keeping your pet safe. Collars and tags can become lost, but chips remain for the lifetime of your pet. Every animal hospital, shelter, and city service that responds to calls of animals without owners will use a special scanner to look for these implanted chips, which contain a unique identification number that is registered to you as an owner. If your pet ever gets out on a solo adventure, a microchip greatly increases the chances of being re-united… but only if your contact information is up to date!

To check the current information on file for your pet, you will need your pet’s microchip number. Here at Wellesley Animal Hospital, we register all chips that we implant in our hospital on your behalf, to ensure this information is never missing. Be sure you can log in (or if your pet was microchipped elsewhere, create an account) with the manufacturer online, so you can update the information in the future. Make sure that all information, particularly your phone number(s) and address, are correct.

As the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) explains, “There are many databases that allow you to register your pet’s microchip, but the one that really counts – the one that animal shelters and veterinarians will search – is the database maintained by the manufacturer of your pet’s microchip.“
